Whew! It has been an exciting year for Vista Pinas. Aside from seeing the re-launch of Tanawing Pinoy as Vista Pinas and its inclusion into the Bayanihan Blog Network, 2007 was the year where we reached the 100-sight milestone, got featured in Inquirer.net, and received attention from Google Sightseeing, the grand-daddy of websites that specialize in the satellite view of Google Maps. To start the year 2008, let’s look back at some of the really fascinating (well, at least to my taste) sights we’ve featured here, awards style.
Proudly Pinoy Award
CEPALCO 1-MW Photovoltaic Power Plant. Did you know that the 1.1-MW solar power plant in Cagayan de Oro is the largest solar power plant in the developing world? Score one for lessening our dependency on foreign oil!
Boracay Mansion. The conviction of former President Estrada for plunder and his subsequent pardon has netizens scrambling for info about his infamous Boracay Mansion in Quezon City as well as for his rest house in Tanay, Rizal.
Not in the Philippines Award
SM City Xiamen. There are plenty of Philippine-related sights in Google Maps that are not found in the Philippines itself. Just look at the Overseas category to see what we’ve explored so far. For last year, the recently featured SM City mall in Xiamen, China is the most interesting for me.
Best from Above
Club Manila East Central. Things definitely look strange and unfamiliar from way up in the sky or space. But there are some places that get additional meaning when you look at it from that point of view. So Club Manila East’s Laguna de Bay-shaped pool gets this year’s award.
Extreme Research Award
Bells of Balangiga. The search for two of the contentious Bells of Balangiga in Google Maps is still the most complex web detective work that I’ve done in Vista Pinas so far. And this makes writing about this sight all the more rewarding.
Best Island or Beach Resort
Dos Palmas Arreceffi Island Resort. Among the resorts we’ve featured in 2007, Dos Palmas’ is the most enticing based on its satellite image. Wouldn’t you want to get away from it all on this really nice tropical island? Abu Sayyaf be damned!
How about you? What are your favorite sights of 2007
