The previously featured Xavier University and the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) are the two premier institutions of higher learning in Northern Mindanao. Arguably, these two offer the best college education among their peers in the whole of Mindanao.
The campus of MSU-IIT, as seen from Google Maps, is hardly impressive, but don’t let the facade fool you because this autonomous branch of the Mindanao State University has been granted 11 Centers of Excellence/Development (COE/COD) by the Commission on Higher Education, placing MSU-IIT fifth after U.P. Diliman, University of Santo Tomas, De La Salle University – Manila, and the Ateneo de Manila University, among colleges and universities having the most number of COE/CODs. Centers of Excellence/Development is CHED’s way of recognizing degree-granting units of colleges and universities that provide top-notch education.
In addition, MSU-IIT is one of the nine CHED-designated Zonal Research Centers in the Philippines, a program initiated by CHED to enhance and centralize the management of the research capabilities of colleges and universities. MSU-IIT has been charged with research in the colleges and universities in the western parts of Mindanao.
