At the center of Cotabato City stands the towering P.C. Hill.
The city is actually built around this 90-feet-high stone fort, i.e., kuta wato, from which the city and nearby provinces get their name.
This hill, also known as Tantawan (Maguindanaoan for “lookout”) stands beside the Rio Grande de Mindanao, which is Mindanao’s largest river and second only to Cagayan River in the country. In historic times, the natives used this hill as a watch tower and as a defensive point.
Today, P.C. Hill now houses the Internal Defense Command of Cotabato City. At some point, the hill was home to the Philippine Constabulary from which the hill now gets its name.
The hill actually looks boring from above when seen in Google Maps. Hopefully, it’ll look better in Google Earth once it gets proper elevation data for the Philippines.
